How to make Modak Recipe...Traditional Steam process..! FabChef
Delicious Modak Recipe of the Day..!
Modak is very popular sweet dish as Prasadam in India to serve our Lord Ganesh. (Modaka Priyaya)
Let's look at the process now -
(Serves - 11 Modaks & Preparation Time - 30-40 min)
Ingredients for Sweet Stuffing:
(Note - You can use any *Cup* for measurement as per availability at home & use the same for all)
1 t-spoon ghee / butter
2 cups of grated coconut
1 cup of grated jaggery/ jaggery powder
½ t-spoon of cardamom powder
Ingredients for dough:
2 cups of water
½ t-spoon salt
1 t-spoon ghee / butter
2 cups rice flour
How to make stuffing -
Step 1 - Keep the flame to medium & place big Tawa/Kadai on stove
Step 2 - Once Tawa is heated add 1 tablespoon of Ghee and 2 cups of grated coconut . Saute coconut, till it turns aromatic (coconut changes its color to light brown).
Step 3 - Add 1 cup of jaggery powder & stir until jaggery melts on medium flame only.
Step 4 - Add 1/2 tablespoon cardamom/elaichi powder and wait till mixture thickness (should not get too hard) & remains moist.
Now stuffing is ready, take into one bowl & keep it aside. Let it cool.
Let's do Modak Dough -
Step 1 - Keep the flame to medium & place big Tawa/Kadai on the stove
Step 2 - Add 2 cups of Water, 1/2 tablespoon salt and 1 spoon ghee
Step 3 - Stir water gently to get salt & ghee dissolve and let water boil until it bubbles.
Step 4 - Add 2 cups of rice flour gently - not to get any lumps , until rice flour absorbs all the water.
Step 5 - Transfer that to a large bowl & let it sit for 5-10 min to knead the dough. (Wet your hands to knead the dough as its hot to prevent from burning)
Preparing Modak with Dough & stuffing to cook -
Step 1 - Take a lemon sized rice flour dough and flatten it.
Step 2 - Make a round shaped (palm sized) puri with thinner edges and use your thumb, forefinger to make Modak shape at the edges of the puri and place 1 tablespoon of stuffing mixture at the center. Now gently by joining all the edges of puri get the perfect Modak shape. (If it is getting difficult for beginners, You can choose any shape as you wish comfortably like Madata Kaja)
Step 3 - Now prepare all the Modak shapes with stuffing as above to steam.
Steaming Modak -
Step 1 - Keep Steamer with 2 cups of water on medium high flame and let the water boil.
Step 2 - Now place the hand-made Modaks in the steamer bowl (Like how you make Idli) and let it steam for 10 min.
Step 3 - Wait for another 5-10 min and take Modaks on a serving plate.
Offer these steamed Modak to Lord Vinayaka and serve it all as prasadam..!
Tips -
Sprinkle some hot water to make the dough softer to get soft Modaks.
It should be 1:1 (Flour: Water) ratio, sometimes take a little bit more, so please do check as per consistency to make dough.
If you're note able to make Modaks shape without cracks - it means your Dough is Dry..! Sprinkle some more hot water to make it soft and moist.
